The Toyger
THE TOYGER
The Toyger is a rare and extraordinary breed developed to resemble a miniature tiger. Powerful in appearance, yet refined in temperament. With bold, flowing vertical stripes, a glittered coat, and a muscular athletic build, the Toyger captures the essence of wild beauty in a fully domestic companion.
Originally developed by breed creator Judy Sugden, the Toyger was designed with intention, to combine dramatic pattern, strong structure, and a confident, engaging personality. Every detail matters from the circular facial markings and small rounded ears to the deep, rich coloration and fluid movement.
Beyond their striking appearance, Toygers are known for their intelligence, social nature, and affectionate temperament. They thrive on interaction, enjoy learning, and form strong bonds with their families. Confident yet gentle, they carry themselves with a natural presence that commands attention both in the show ring and in the home.
The Toyger is not simply a striped cat it is a living work of art, a breed still evolving toward perfection, and a testament to thoughtful, purposeful breeding.
The Toyger – Show Standard Excellence
The Toyger is a medium to large, muscular, and well balanced breed developed to replicate the look of a miniature tiger while remaining fully domestic in temperament. In the show ring, evaluation emphasizes structure, movement, pattern, and overall harmony.
General Type & Structure
The Toyger should present a powerful, substantial build with medium to heavy boning and firm musculature. The body is long and deep, with a strong neck, broad chest, and a level topline. Movement should be fluid and confident, reflecting strength and athleticism without coarseness.
Head & Expression
The head forms a modified, medium sized shape with a long, broad muzzle that creates the distinctive “big cat” appearance. The muzzle should be well-defined and muscular, with prominent whisker pads.
Ears are small and rounded, set as much on the sides of the head as on the top.
Eyes are medium in size, rounded, and set slightly deep, contributing to an intense yet calm expression.
Coat & Texture
The coat is short, plush, and luxurious, with a soft, dense feel. Glitter is highly desirable, adding depth and radiance to the overall presentation. Coat condition and clarity of contrast are critical in competition.
Pattern
Pattern is the defining feature of the Toyger. The ideal exhibits bold, vertical, braided striping that wraps around the body, with high contrast against a rich, warm background color. Stripes should be varied, flowing, and well-defined avoiding horizontal “mackerel” patterning typical of other breeds.
Circular facial markings are essential, along with a butterfly pattern on the forehead and distinct markings on the cheeks and jaw. The underside should be lighter, enhancing contrast and emphasizing the tiger-like aesthetic.
Color
The preferred coloration is brown mackerel tabby with a warm orange to reddish ground color and deep, nearly black striping. Clarity, depth of color, and strong contrast are highly valued.
Temperament
In the show hall, the Toyger should display confidence, composure, and a friendly disposition. A well-bred Toyger is interactive and alert without aggression or excessive shyness.
